1. Statutory Protections for Consumers
Cease Communication Notices: Consumers have the legal right to demand in writing that debt collectors cease all telephone and direct communications.
Debt Validation Demands: Within 30 days of initial collector contact, consumers can demand written verification proving the debt amount, original creditor, and legal right to collect.
Prohibited Behaviors: Collectors may not call before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM, contact employers after being told it is prohibited, or threaten criminal prosecution.
